Celebrating Women Through Song
Tuesday, March 8, 2022 is International Women’s Day (IWD). The theme for this year’s event is “Break the Bias - Celebrating women's achievements, raising awareness against bias, and taking action for equality.”
I can think of no better way to raise awareness and celebrate women’s achievements than through song. Therefore, I decided to host a music festival at my venue in the virutal world of Second Life. The festival will feature 13 female singer/songwriters performing as avatars. Yes, that’s right. They will be broadcasting LIVE from their homes around to the world, but will appear on my Second Life stage as avatars.
For those who don’t know about Second Life, it is a virtual world in which people represented as avatars do everything from build homes, design and sell fashion, learn to surf, play poker, attend support groups and classes, fall in love and yes perform live music. In many ways spending time in Second Life can feel like having a second life, particularly if you create friendships and get involved in activities that spark your interest. My own experiences there have helped me grow as a person and allowed me to expand my creative horizons in ways I could never have imagined. Yes, I am a fan.
Each of the 13 women who will be performing for us on March 8th is a consummate pro, so you can expect to hear some terrific music. The only thing I’ve asked them to do is play only songs by women. These will include orignals of their own as well as songs by their favorite female musicians. The festivities will start at 8:00 am PST and conclude at 9:00 pm PST (the last show begins at 8:00 pm). If you are in Second Life and would like to check out the special event space created just for the festival, here is the SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/GoldLand/147/44/25
For those who are unable to attend in Second Life, we will be broadcasting live to the Internet. I’ll be posting the link as well as the final schedule of performers when we get closer to March 8th.
In the meantime, I will be giving you a sneak peak into the lives and music of each of our musicians leading up to the event. Each day for the next twelve days expect to learn a bit about each of our performers and her music.
Tomorrow you will learn about an avatar who goes by the fun and quirky name of Cylindrian Rutabaga. So mark your calendars and watch your inboxes for Pass Along Songs emails. This is going to be a BLAST!
